A Lasting Power of Attorney, also known as an LPA is a document in which you appoint people you trust as your attorneys to be able to make decisions for you in the event that you can not make them for yourself. In this short article, we are going to share why they are important, how they work and to give you three reasons why you need one.

Firstly, it is important to note that there are two different types of Lasting Power of Attorney. One governing your health and welfare and one for your property and financial affairs. These documents are created during your lifetime and critically, when you have the mental capacity to do so.

The average age of someone creating an LPA according to a WillSuite study is 67 and according to dementiastatistics.org someones risk of developing dementia increases over the age of 65.

Our advice would be to create the documents now. Whether you choose to register them now or not is up to you. It’s simply crucial that you have them in place, signed and ready.

We can help put the documents in place and will provide you with all of the information and guidance you need. Firstly though, these are 3 reasons you need an LPA:

  1. If you are the ‘breadwinner’ in your family you need an LPA. If you lose capacity and you don’t have an LPA your loved ones may not be able to access funds needed to pay the mortgage or the bills.
  2. If you travel a lot for work or undertake sports with an increased risk of injury, you need an LPA.
  3. If you would like to provide specific instructions about how you would like to be treated should something happen to you, you need an LPA

This was a simple article and three very simple reasons but all perfectly valid. Creating your LPA is simple with us.
